It is a new sign of the deep crisis cargo SNCF

It is a new sign of the deep crisis cargo SNCF. The flight of customers to private freight operators has intensified during the first months of the year. End of may, these newcomers - seven companies have emerged since the liberalisation of the market mid-2006, with Euro Cargo Rail (subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn) in spearhead - held a market share of 12, according to our information. Either a jump huge in scale, when compared to 8.3 in late 2008, and even the 4.8 found end of 2007. In five months, private operators will have therefore made almost as much in terms of commercial conquest during the first year and a half of liberalisation of the market!

"This is evidence that the opening to competition from rail transport of goods in France is a success, few people predicted in 2006", says Hervé de Tréglodé, Deputy Director General of Réseau Ferré of France (RFF). With this rate of 12, the France closer to market sustained its German neighbor. German, private operators would hold a market share of about 20. Difference, this level was obtained over a longer period since the German market was opened 15 years ago.

Heavy losses for SNCF freight

This increase of private enterprises is even more notable that it intervenes dans an extremely difficult economic contexte. "The newcomers are suffering like everyone else, but they demonstrate a great capacity for resistance", j. Hervé de Tréglodé. Taking into account of the reference designator of RFF - trainskilomètres, i.e. the product of the number of trains by the distance travelled by the trains - the private sector rose from 0.6 million in December, to 0.8 million end of May. At the same time, freight SNCF has fallen from 6.3 million to 5.8 million train-miles.

As a whole, rail freight remains the low waters reached late last year. The month of November 2008 had been marked by a sharp stall, with a fall of 16 a month. December confirmed this trend, and since then, the sector remains at levels close to 7 million of trainskilomètres each month, when the average was rather understood between 9 and 10 million the previous. The situation is however much worse still if one is interested in another indicator, the tonnekilomètre. Because the number of trains circulating on the network without prejudice to the filling ratio of cars! In this case, it seems that the sector has not received point low end 2008. On the contrary: according to government statistics of the Commissioner-General for sustainable development, the first quarter was marked by a fall of 18.8 in tonne-kilometres, after a rate of-9.1 in the fourth quarter of 2008. Transportation combined (-28,1) is particularly affected by this state of affairs.

This makes all the more problematic the situation of freight SNCF, whose sales have declined by nearly 25 in the first half according to our information, and who expects more than 600 million euros of operating losses in 2009. The railway company must present its rescue plan ("Les Echos" from July 20), which should particularly rely on a significant reduction of wing for the activity of isolated car in September.
